Urbanite Returns Jan. 9 with regional premiere of Max Wolf Friedlich's Job

SARASOTA — Urbanite Theatre returns with the regional premiere of Job by Max Wolf Friedlich. After two sold-out runs off Broadway, this “slick, cleverly crafted drop-tower ride” of a play (Vulture) will premiere at Urbanite’s downtown Sarasota black box theater on January 9.

It’s January 2020. Jane has been placed on leave from her Big Tech job after a viral workplace incident. She’s determined to return, but first her assigned therapist, Loyd, must authorize it. Loyd suspects her work might be doing more harm than good.

A tightly wound psychological thriller, JOB focuses on two careerists from different generations, genders, and paradigms to examine what it means to be a citizen of the internet and our obligation to help those who need it most.

Producing Artistic Director Summer Wallace says, “It’s a brilliant thriller that holds a mirror up to our tech-saturated, generationally divided world. This piece, like many of the works we produce, is bound to spark new conversations after the curtain closes.”

Job is more than just a story about a showdown between two careerists of different generations. It’s a suspenseful masterpiece for the digital age that delves into the shadows of the internet and the human psyche. As the Vulture review notes, the play is “specifically, methodically crafted to beat up emotional dust,” leaving audiences to sift through its unsettling questions long after the ambiguous final blackout.

Job runs through February 15. Visit Urbanite’s website for more information.
