SARASOTA -- A scheduled court hearing for Bob Waechter was postponed last Friday because the State Attorney's Office has yet to file formal charges against the former Sarasota County GOP chairman, who is accused of identity theft in connection with a scheme to pose as a fellow Republican rival in order to make false campaign donations to Democrats.
The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested Waechter last month on a felony charge for allegedly using a prepaid credit card to make the spurious campaign contributions. A new hearing date has not yet been set. Waechter has already resigned from Sarasota County's Tourism Development Council and the Board of Zoning Appeals in advance of the county commission's decision on whether to remove him in light of the charges.
