Walter Mays, Jr.

It is with deep sorrow and abiding love that we announce the peaceful transition of Walter Mays Jr. into the presence of the Lord. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and proud United States Marine - who departed this life on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the age of 73.

Born on November 11, 1951, in Palmetto, Florida, Walter was the son of Doris Lee Mays and the late Walter Mays Sr. He began his education at Lincoln Memorial and was among the first Black students to integrate Palmetto High School, graduating with the Class of 1969. He later attended Strayer College in Washington, D.C., where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration.

Walter was a man of great strength, resilience, and unwavering dedication. He served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, holding the role of Supply Administration Operations Specialist. His service took him to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and Quantico, Virginia. During his time in the Marines, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Sharpshooter Rifle Badge, and he was honorably discharged. Walter's military service was a lifelong source of pride and was respected by all who knew him.

After his military service, Walter continued to pursue his passion for helping others and uplifting his community. He built a successful career as a Real Estate Contract Administrator, dedicating himself to assisting individuals and families in securing homes and business opportunities. During this chapter of his life, he met the love of his life, Gail Murray. Gail and Walter were united in marriage on September 26, 2008, in Brooklyn, New York, at the Church of Christ - a cherishedunion built on love. Walter showed Gail love through his faithfulness, support, time, and intimacy.

Walter will be fondly remembered for his charming personality, kind heart, and infectious laughter - always accompanied by a vibrant smile. He had a remarkable way of making everyone feel welcomed, heard, and appreciated. Known for his well-groomed appearance, striking cat-like eyes, and vibrant spirit, Walter spoke multiple languages and carried himself with confidence and grace. His presence lit up every room he entered, and nothing in life could keep him down.

He is survived by his loving wife, Gail Mays; his children, Jermaine R. Mays, Mathew G. Mays (Holly), Donnie I. Mays;his stepchildren, Monique Lewis (Patrick), Ronald Foster, and Daisy Murray; his grandchildren, Xavier Mays, Lauren Kinder, Amaïa Mays Montes, Ellison Mays, Logan Kinder, and Layla Kinder; and his devoted mother, Doris Lee Mays. He is alsosurvived by his siblings, Donna Maria Mays and Myron Mays (Cassandra); and his in-laws, Earl Murray III (Jo-Ann), Christopher Murray, Michelle Murray, Eric Murray; including a special sister in-law Nina Mathis whose unwavering love, support, and presence brought comfort and joy to Walter throughout his life; Walter leaves behind a host of nieces, Towayna Smart, Rhonda, Shayla Mays, Krystal Mays, Kimberly Mays, La Tanya Franklin, Crystal Green, Nadia Walker (Joel), Dominique Pelote (Malik) and Nephews Gary Mays Jr., Christopher Mark Murray Jr., and Eric Murray Jr.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Mays Sr., and his brother, Gary L. Mays and sister in law Ritha Armstrong.

A special acknowledgment is extended to Christopher Powell, Walter's personal barber and best friend of seven years. His loyal friendship and compassionate care brought comfort and strength during Walter's time of illness. His presence was a true blessing and a testament to the power of brotherhood, loyalty, and unwavering support.
