Damon Fowler
Coquina Seafood Festival
Friday - 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Tampa’s Damon Fowler, a masterful singer, guitar player and songwriter, has absorbed the best of and furthered the work of the region’s definitive artists. A hard driving troubadour, his music is steeped with soul and representative of the many styles that make up the roots of American music. He has gained the respect of his peers given his featured slot in Butch Truck’s Freight Train band and his side gig as guitarist in the Dickey Betts Band. Critics have compared Fowler’s guitar work to Johnny Winter and Jeff Beck, while his slide guitar is reminiscent of the late Duane Allman. Fowler can play fiery guitar runs with the best of them, and his lyrical work on lap steel and dobro makes him a stand out performer among the legions of guitar heroes. His new release, ALAFIA MOON, combines all the influences that have shaped his distinctive blues career.

On the strength of Fowler’s hybrid of roots rock, blues, and sacred steel, the Florida native started wowing audiences with his musical exploits as a teenager, building a reputation as one of the hottest young players on the scene. Adding songwriting and vocal skills to his repertoire over the years has brought him many accolades, with music journalists extolling his originality and maturity as well as his technical guitar expertise. All of these attributes have helped further define Damon Fowler as one of the great Southern artists of his time.

Roy Book Binder feat. Pedro y Zooey
Fogartyville
Saturday - 8:00 p.m.

Roy Book Binder has been rambling around the world for the past 45 years! He gave up his Greenwich Village “pad” in the early 1970s and lived in his “Tour Bus” for the next 15 years crisscrossing the U.S. and appearing at festivals throughout Canada and Europe.

Book Binder, traveled with the legendary Rev. Gary Davis in the late 1960s….. The Book, recorded his first solo acoustic Blues album in the ’70s, which was the first to receive 5 stars in DOWNBEAT magazine! In the late 80s ‘The Book’ was part of Bonnie Raitt’s East Coast Tour, which included an appearance on The Grand Old Opry which led to almost 30 appearances on NASHVILLE NOW’s, Ralph Emory Show! In the ’90s he often appeared with JORMA KAUKONEN (who recorded 2 of Book Binder’s songs).

THE GOOD BOOK, Book Binder’s latest release of all original songs, reached #3 on AirPlayDirect’s Americana charts! #1 was Guy Clark & #2 was the late Townes Van Zandt. Folkdj.org had Roy in the top 3 artists for July.

Pedro y Zooey bring you an exotic blend of roots music from all corners of the globe, bringing a nostalgic atmosphere of timeless, soulful music with a contemporary twist. They perform as a duo, trio, or full band, and their sound goes from haunting ballads to colorful dance numbers inspired by catchy pieces collected from around the world. You’ll hear delta blues, Latin, calypso, reggae, Americana, swing, and other feels from around the world, as well as their own charming originals, to create a sentimental vibe of timeless music.

Formed in 2018, Pedro & Zooey is a project that blossomed from the musical expressions of multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter, Pedro Arevalo (who explores all manners of stringed instruments, including dobro, guitar, slide, and bass), and Zooey Seraphine on violin, vocals, & other inspirations
Paid for in part by Sarasota County Tourist Development Tax revenues

Book Binder has the goods: the original, the bare-knuckle, the low-down . . . blues. Who can say they were friends with the Rev. Gary Davis, Pink Anderson and Robert Lockwood? And toured with Arthur Big Boy Crudup, Hot Tuna, JJ Cale & Bonnie Raitt? Book Binder can. He has the stories, the licks, and the mystery of timeless music in his fingers. He’s been featured on a PBS special and interviewed by Terry Gross on “Fresh Air.” He’s also a regular at Fur Peace Ranch, where he teaches along with Jorma Kaukonen. When he brings his ‘Tour Bus’ to town, a one-man blues-fest ensues. He plays and he entertains, feeding us music and stories, and the evening is a celebration for us all. We’re privileged to have Roy here to preserve–and extend—the tradition of great American blues music. (JAMES HIPP)

PARADE
Manatee Performing Arts Center
Saturday - 8:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.

The story of love coming to life in a world ripped apart by prejudice…

This musical drama takes place amid religious intolerance, political injustice and racial tension, the stirring Tony Award-winning Parade explores the endurance of love and hope against all the odds. Daring, innovative and bold, Parade is filled with soaring music and a heart-wrenching story, offering a moral lesson about the dangers of prejudice and ignorance that should not be forgotten. The drama is based on the true story of Leo Frank’s trial and lynching in the early 20th-century Atlanta.

Ostracized for his faith and Northern heritage, Jewish factory manager Leo Frank is accused of murdering a teenaged factory girl the day of the annual Confederate Memorial Day parade. Alfred Uhry’s award-winning book and Jason Robert Brown’s rousing, colorful and haunting score illuminate a circus of conflicting accounts, false testimony and mishandled evidence in a town reeling with social and racial tension. Isolated from the world, Leo develops a new and deeper love for his wife, who tirelessly crusades for his freedom.

Guest Director Scott Keys leads this production.

Rated R. Parade contains hate speech, violent imagery, enacted violence, and non-firing replica firearms.

This is one of our Action Through Acting productions and is presented in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee.
