Weekend Sounds: November 10-12

Posted

BRADENTON – It's another weekend and you know what that means. If you guessed another great lineup of local, talented musicians in Manatee, Sarasota and surrounding counties, you would be correct. Check out The Bradenton Times Weekend Sounds to see what bands you can catch at your favorite venues.

Brigid's Cross
Bridge Tender Inn
Friday - 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.

For 27 years and counting, Paul Baker and Peggy Goonan-Baker have brought an eclectic and entertaining collection of music to the stage. Formed in 1996, Brigid's Cross has played it all: true-to-heritage traditional Celtic folk, contemporary Irish music, country, rock, alternative, and originals. Truly eclectic music, with a Celtic twist! Audiences are pulled into a vortex of fine musicianship, humor, high energy and audience participation when they see a BC performance. Currently, Brigid's Cross mostly performs as a two-piece, and has for the last 15 years or so.

Paul (Paulie) is the Master of Ceremonies, and a classically trained violinist, to boot. He's what is known as a "Suzuki brat." A prodigy of the Suzuki Violin School. He first picked up the violin just before his third birthday, and studied classically for 13 years. He has been performing in bands for over 40 years, and as a soloist since he was a young child, and his talent and experience certainly shine.

Peggy has been involved in music since she was a young child, and has been performing professionally for over 30 years. Paulie and Peggy's stage banter together is often said to be one of the most entertaining parts of the show. They often utilize technology to fill out their sound, frequently using backing guitar tracks featuring their semi-retired guitarist, and nephew, Richie Reece. No cover.

About the venue:

Established 30 years ago, Bridge Tender Inn (BTI) is Bradenton’s favorite sports bar and grille to eat, drink, and socialize while watching a televised sports event. You can chug beers, eat lip-smacking food, enjoy live music, and make great memories in a comfy, laid-back setting.

This Packer bar is owned by Fred Bartizal and has a staff of 50+ veteran servers who love to offer the best drink-and-dine experience to their guests. The general manager, Sue, has been here for 25+ years and the assistant manager, Shannon, has been here for 10+ years. They’re the ones who oversee making that experience happen!

KoKo Ray
Cortez Clam Factory
Friday - 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.

Koko Ray Hansen is a multi-instrumentalist, band leader, music producer, Transcendental music practitioner, visual artist, and teacher. He lives on the gulf coast of Florida and works several acts in that area as well as touring and recording on an ongoing basis.

About the venue:

Located in the San Remo Shores area, about a mile down the road from Cortez Fishing Village. This eatery/watering hole forgoes the posh nightclub vibe in favor of a more down-home pace, but it is still plenty tropical.

The Clam Factory books a steady stream of Sarasota and Bradenton-based bands. This 'Five Star Dive' Bar has some of the best Music, Food and Service on the West Coast of Florida!

It is locally owned and the owners combine 100 years of experience in the seafood business in order to give great food at the best price in town. On top of the excellent food, there is much to keep you entertained.

Have Gun, Will Travel
Birdrock Taco Shack
Friday - 7:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.

Have Gun, Will Travel is a nationally acclaimed Alternative rock/folk band known for its indie rock, classic country, hints-of-punk, Americana sound. Indeed, it is challenging to assign the genre specifically, as it seems HGWT set off determined to create one all its own. Born of Bradenton, references to its hometown roots can be found tucked into some of the band's original songs, and in the title of its 2009 album, ""Postcards from the Friendly City."" The band's most recent release of the highly anticipated album, Silver Sounds, delivered to fans yet another tribute to Bradenton with "The ballad Our Fair City."

Formed in 2006, the band's members consist of brothers Matt Burke (singer-guitarist) and Daniel Burke (bassist), and longtime friends guitarist Scott Anderson, drummer Sam Farmer, and keyboardist Edward Stork. Lead vocalist Matt Burke's songwriting draws on Western themes of life and death, honor, and morality throughout the band's narrative songs. Cover $10.

About the venue:

Located in Bradenton Florida's Village of the Arts, Birdrock Taco Shack is not your average taco joint, but a unique funky-fun taco spot and live music venue. Owner and chef David Shiplett (who also owns the popular Cottonmouth South Soul Kitchen) doesn't serve up just any tacos. Dave has worked as a Chef in San Francisco, San Diego, Sarasota, and now Bradenton. Dine inside the eclectic artsy shack or outdoors on the porch and back patio. Great food, cool people... and TACOS! 1213 13th Avenue West, Bradenton.

Dean Johanesen
Bradenton Market
Saturday - 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Dean Johanesen is a singer-songwriter and guitarist from New York. He has resided and performed in several US states, but currently calls Sarasota home. Johanesen's passion for gypsy jazz music in the vein of Django Reinhardt has put him on a musical path focused on stories of old times, placed in a backdrop of gypsy swing, a style that he has coined "circus swing." Throughout his career, Johanesen has shared bills with notable musicians such as Robby Krieger (formerly of the Doors), Donovan Frankenreiter, Martha Wainwright, Howard Jones, Steve Forbert, John Waite, and Peter Mulvey. Join Dean at Cafe in the Park. No cover.
