We celebrate the remarkable life of William Bryan “Twinkie” Wilkes, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who has inspired and touched our lives. He was born on September 30, 1962, in Bradenton. Bryan was the eldest son of Jerry (Air Force) and Kay Wilkes. Though his parents preceded him, their love and values stayed with him.
Bryan's life journey was marked by dedication, service, love of family and sports. He was a proud wrestler and a graduate of Southeast High School in 1980. In 1982 Bryan joined the United States Marine Corps and served until 1986. He was an aircraft ordinance tech and saw combat in Grenada as a helicopter crew chief. He returned to Florida to coach wrestling and eventually landed at Southeast High School to coach wrestling and football (1991–2004). In that time, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida. While coaching and attending school he was a valued employee for Hospice and Florida Power and Light.
His passion for wrestling along with his professional qualifications, made him irresistible to the Palmetto High School administration. He accepted their challenge to teach and start the Tiger’s wrestling program in 2005. After establishing a successful program, he began living the dream as Palmetto’s Athletic Director. Amazingly he found time to earn his master’s degree. In 2022 Coach Wilkes was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Florida Chapter with a “Lifetime Service to Wrestling” award.
Bryan's life was rich with hobbies that brought him fun and camaraderie. He was a fanatic for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Alabama Crimson Tide. When calling into the Tampa sports programs he was known as “Buccaneer” Bryan. Fantasy football was his favorite outlet. Coach Wilkes won national wrestling age group awards and twice competed internationally. His entertaining spirit and loyalty made him a cherished companion and a friend whose presence brought endless laughter.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Logan (Danny) Wilkins, and his adored grandchildren, Killian and Callie. Bryan leaves behind his brothers, Darren and Dana, Uncle Joey (Cameron) Logan, Cousin Kyra (Kayus) Harwick, and his partner, Jenny “Facebook” Alexander.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Tidewell Hospice for their compassionate care. Thank you to the family and friends who comforted Bryan. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bryan's memory can be made to Palmetto High School Athletics, and Tidwell Hospice. A private military service to honor Bryan's life will be held at Bushnell National Cemetery.
