I googled the question asking what stake the Federal government has in this lawsuit. Below is the answer.
"Yes, the federal government was potentially involved in the Florida Medicaid lawsuit against Centene. Specifically, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is entitled to a share of any settlement proceeds. While Florida settled with Centene for $67 million, only $57 million was considered "potential Medicaid-related damages to the State," and the federal government is owed its share of that portion under federal rules.
Additionally, there were concerns raised by some about potential unlawful diversion of Medicaid funds, including a $10 million payment to the Hope Florida Foundation, which could lead to federal recoupment of those funds.
Therefore, while the state of Florida initiated and settled the lawsuit with Centene, the federal government has a vested interest in the settlement due to its funding of Medicaid and potential recoupment of improperly used funds."
A significant party of his legacy will be the destruction of scores of natural systems. Florida has seen an assault on everything natural, from an army of entitled business men like Pat Neal. Their eyes are on their balance sheet to the detriment of everyone else.
How we do things matters.
Clearly is correct in his analysis, however, the problem with our Health Caste system is much larger. The focus on corporate profits over healthcare delivery is the main issue. The following reforms can change this.
Remove the cap on earnings for social security FICA which is currently 12.4% half from individual paychecks and half from the employer. This would increase Social Security revenue by over 1 Trillion dollars. This amount would not be needed so the FICA should be reduced putting more take home pay in workers paychecks and revenue in the employers’ business. The increased earnings would be subject to federal taxing adding revenue to the general fund but there is still a net gain for the employee and business.
Eliminate Medicare advantage plans. Medicare advantage plans are for profit insurance companies that cost Medicare more than traditional Medicare while lowering the quality of care.
Move Medicaid eligible people into Medicare and close that program. This will reduce both a State and Federal government expense. Medicaid is paid for 50% by the Federal government and 50% by the State.
Make all Medicare recipients eligible for the federal government's 340-B pharmacy program. This would dramatically reduce the cost of medications for Medicare recipients. This would eliminate for profit part d Medicare plans.
Move part B Medicare into part A, have one plan. This eliminates the cost of for profit part B supplemental plans.
Allow individuals and businesses to purchase Medicare plans directly from the government. The plans would be purchased with a 3% margin that would be used to offset FICA rates.
Make every bill passed by congress stand alone, eliminating the practice of tacking on irrelevant bills that would not pass on their own. Good bills should not be held hostage by bad bills.
I agree with Dawn. As an employee of development services for the county, most day care operations were in existing buildings, repurposed homes not new buildings. Very lame argument. Download the Impact Fee Administration Fee Manual off the county website and you will see the adopted changes. Transportation (Roads) were reduced to 50% in 2009. In 2011 roads stayed at 50%. In 2018 all impact fees were set at 90%. Manatee County last collected 100% for ALL fees in 2005. Developers have had a long enough break.
That doesn’t go nearly far enough. Dogs that have viciously attacked or killed people or pets should be confiscated and put down. They are not safe to be in a community and would likely repeat at the first opportunity. I hope the victims or their families sue the dog owners for every penny they have. I have seem way too much of these incidents. They are often horrific and have long lasting effects on the victims, both physically and psychologically.
From his appointment of Satcher to be our Supv of Elections, to his accepting a $8000 golf simulator machine from a developer, to his secret proposal to build pickleball courts in state parks, to his failure to comply with public records law laws, to his spending $millions in legal fees (paying $750/hr) fighting public record requests, to his appointment of Ben Sasse to be Pres of UF, to his appointment of Richard Corcoran, Bill Galvano and the taking over of New College, to his use of taxpayer funds to fight Amendment 3 and 4, to his protection of the insurance industry, to his illegal siphoning of $10 million and transferring to his wife's Hope Florida....and now this latest attempt to give away valuable land to a crony developer....I could go and on with examples that Ron DeSantis is a sleazeball politician that time after time puts his own interests above ours. He should go to jail over the Hope Florida scheme, but Pam Bondi is too busy going after Harvard University, Kris Krebs and Miles Taylor to investigate real corruption.
If commissioners want to continue on the board, they need to listen to the people, not the developers. Development has obviously been too rapid, creating numerous problems that existing residents have had to suffer with and pay for.
**** poor timing to say the least. A superintendent had made significant strides in improving the the quality of our education, higher morale within the school district employees and so much more. They let their personal frustration overrule what was best for the School District has a hole. The Public was soccer punched as well, allowing no public comment after the debate to better inform the citizens and taxpayers before they were allowed to make a public comment. The school district will be left in chaos and calamity just like it has been in the past… What were they thinking? I guess we’ll find out at the voter booth. Disappointing of the Board‘s decision is an understatement… For the record.
This is cruel. No animal should be subjected to a steel trap. How would you like it? Why does the FWC always go backwards? They never seem to have the best interest of the animal but rather the opposite. First they want to shoot bears and now they want to maim them. I just don't get it.
Thank you Josh Salmon, for this piece and your career of excellent investigative journalism (Josh was an award winning investigative reporter for the Sarasota Herald Tribune before their local reporting took a dive with the likes of Jesse Mendoza). Re: reliance on CDDs, I find it strange that Commissioner Siddique feins concern that "previous County Commissions did not fund infrastructure...they just deflected to CDDs." Yet isn't Siddique doing exactly that? Siddique was part of the 4-3 majority (with Kruse and, of course, Ballard and Rahn) that approved rezoning a large parcel on Buckeye Rd for 186 housing units plus commercial. Talk about approving without infrastructure...Buckeye Rd is a narrow 2-lane road barely wide enough for two vehicles. No shoulder, no turn lane, and Piney Point's toxic waste a stone throw away. Siddique and Rahn (Ballard was absent) also voted to re-zone a parcel in Tara for development of 70 apartments to be built. Again, talk about no infrastructure, Tara Blvd and SR 70 is the most dangerous intersection in the County per the DOT according to testimony, so why would Tal vote to add 70-some new apartments without having minimal safety infrastructure? Tal also spoke in favor of a Pat Neal requested rezone that would allow for over 400 new single family homes in eastern Manatee. (Neal is potential major campaign donor for Mrs. Siddique's recently announced run for the state legislature) Does anyone who has to get from point A to point B in Manatee County feel we have even the bare minimum concurrent traffic infrastructure? Yet Tal was ready to approve 400 urban sprawl homes before the vote was deferred. So how is Tal any different from the "previous County Commissions" he is quoted as criticizing?
Politics and influences on our well being MIRROR what is happening at the national level....powerful entities with deep pockets are controlling the lives of all Americans...so they can fatten their wallets
Illegal and dishonorable behavior to avoid public transparency and oversight seems to be the hallmark of the Corcoran administration that has turned a once internationally known honors college into a political showcase of authoritarian rule, making it a dumbed-down jockshop resembling a private religious "college" with disdain for academic, intellectual, and social freedoms following the repressive political objectives of the governor. All of this has been allowed by the Florida "legislators" who similarly fear the public. Truly pathetic! Replace all of the politicians who have enabled this.
Point 1: State is going crazy with this burdensome and more restrictive regulations by local government. Based on some of the language of SB 180 they are extending the prohibition until 2027. Bill will allow for Comp plan amendments by a private applicant. The way I read this, it will happen with every hurricane from now on that has a federal declaration.
Point 2. Commissioner Felts had already spoken during deliberation for almost 15 minutes after the presentations. If she had just allowed for the vote without speaking again, there probably been a denial. I admire her passion but she needs to learn when to speak and when it is not necessary.
The Trump administration doesn’t seem to know that it’s government of, by and for the people. They are dismantling the parts of the government that serve the citizens. Please pay attention people. Read the constitution. This is OUR government.
Looks like the Supreme Court is ruling for the wealthy developers and not the people of the United States that pay their salaries or the Constitution. We, The United States of American are heading down the path of dictatorship with the help of the nor so supreme, Supreme Court. They need to read the Constitution before every decision they make.
