This used to be a more common experience. History reveals that 60 years ago it was common practice to regularly "open the gates" to preserve the dam. It was necessary to avert a worse disaster. The more present problem is the fact that the area was developed not to allow this very safety precaution. So it was overdeveloped and now you have to exercise this safety trigger. Not poor decision to open the gates but poor decision to develop!

Maybe, just maybe, this is the warning that should be heeded when the County Commissioners of 1989 set the Future Development Area Boundary into play. Maybe this another we have wetlands!
