BRADENTON -- Officer Brandon Smolarz was named the Bradenton Police Officer of the Month for June 2013 after he nabbed a thief red-handed.

While on patrol during an early morning shift on May 10, Officer Smolarz observed a man standing outside of a car. The car’s dome light was on and the man was holding something. As Officer Smolarz approached, the subject attempted to flee. Officer Smolarz stopped him and discovered he was holding a pair of sunglasses.

Due to the time this incident, Officer Smolarz found this to be odd and requested assistance from other officers. He then located the owner of the vehicle and asked if he had anything of value in his car; the owner answered a pair of sunglasses.
Officer Smolarz then showed him the sunglasses that the subject was in possession of and the vehicle owner positively identified them as his. The vehicle owner wished to file charges and the subject was arrested for burglary.
