CATCH OF THE WEEK

https://www.thebradentontimes.com/clientuploads/fishing/Catch.jpg

Pat Redmond, from Sarasota, FL, fished the backcountry of Gasparilla Sound near Boca Grande with Capt. Rick Grassett. He caught and released a 27 inch snook and followed it up with a 27 inch red on a CAL jig with a shad tail to complete his slam.

FISHING UPDATES

Gulf snook to close in Gulf state, federal waters

  • Snook will close to all harvest in Gulf state, federal and inland waters, including all of Monroe County and Everglades National Park, starting May 1. Seasonal harvest closures protect Florida’s valuable snook populations and help sustain and improve the fishery for the future.
  • Snook is open to harvest in Atlantic state, federal and inland waters, including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River, through May 31, closing June 1.
  • Both the Atlantic and Gulf will reopen for recreational harvest Sept. 1.

FWC approves sea cucumber management changes

  • The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) at its April meeting near Tallahassee established a commercial daily trip and vessel limit of 200 sea cucumbers in both state and federal waters.
  • This change will go into effect June 1. The Commission chose this limit today after considering potential management options. The change was requested by the existing commercial fishery as a proactive conservation measure.

Gulf recreational red snapper season set

  • The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) set the Gulf recreational red snapper season in state waters April 16 at a meeting near Tallahassee. The season will be a total of 52 days in 2014 and will start the Saturday before Memorial Day (May 24 this year) and remain open through July 14, closing July 15.
  • Starting the season the Saturday before Memorial Day will provide recreational red snapper fishing through an important holiday weekend, helping attract more visitors and bringing economic benefits to our coastal communities.

FWC moves forward with creation of a Gulf Reef Fish Data Reporting System

  • The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) at its April 16 meeting in Tallahassee moved forward with a proposal to create a Gulf Reef Fish Data Reporting System that would help improve recreational reef fish data collection in Florida Gulf waters. This new system would help determine how many anglers are targeting reef fish in the Gulf. A sample of these anglers would be surveyed to provide more accurate catch and effort data for reef fish trips.
  • This proposal will be brought back before the Commission at its June meeting in Fort Myers for a final public hearing.
  • If approved, private recreational anglers fishing from a boat in Gulf state waters (excluding Monroe County), including those 65 and older, would be required to take part in the Gulf Reef Fish Data Reporting System to harvest or possess any of the following reef fish: red and vermilion snapper; gag, black and red grouper; gray triggerfish; greater and lesser amberjack; banded rudderfish; and almaco jack.
  • Anglers, captain and crew aboard for-hire vessels would not be required to partake in the data-collection system because they already have their own survey. Anglers under 16 years of age and those fishing from a vessel with a vessel recreational fishing license would also be exempt.

Lionfish invasion: FWC moves forward with management changes

  • The lionfish is an invasive species that threatens Florida’s native wildlife and habitat. With that in mind, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) on April 16 moved forward with steps to combat the spread of invasive lionfish.
  • Changes proposed by FWC staff at today’s meeting near Tallahassee will be brought back before the Commission at its June meeting in Fort Myers for final approval. Changes include:
  • Prohibiting the importation of live lionfish;
  • Prohibiting the development of aquaculture of lionfish;
  • Allowing the harvest of lionfish when diving with a rebreather, a device that recycles air and allows divers to remain in the water for longer periods of time; and
  • Increasing opportunities that will allow participants in approved tournaments and other organized events to spear lionfish or other invasive species in areas where spearfishing is not allowed. This will be done through a permitting system..

WEEKLY FISHING REPORT BY CAPT. RICK GRASSETT

https://www.thebradentontimes.com/clientuploads/news_images/201212/080513_tarpon.jpg
Capt. Rick DePaiva, from Ft. Myers, FL, battles a tarpon jumped on a fly while fishing the coastal gulf with Capt. Rick Grassett.

Anglers fishing with me on my Action Craft flats skiff the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released reds, snook, trout, bluefish and flounder in Sarasota Bay on flies, DOA Shrimp, DOA Deadly Combos and CAL jigs with shad tails during the past week.

Mark Wayde, from MI, fished with me on Tuesday. We spent some time in the coastal gulf scouting for false albacore (little tunny), tripletail and tarpon. Although sea conditions were good, we had very little visibility and didn’t find anything. We came back into Sarasota Bay and worked deep grass flats on both sides of the bay where he caught and released trout, jacks and bluefish on an Ultra Hair Clouser fly.

Steve Ritter and his son, Bryce, from WI, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Wednesday. We fished deep grass flats on the west side of the bay where they caught and released trout to 19” and a flounder on CAL jigs with shad tails.

Mark Nichols, owner of DOA Fishing Lures, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Friday. We fished shallow water, scouting for the Sarasota CCA Photo All Release Challenge fishing tournament which was held on Saturday. We had good action on shallow flats on both sides of the bay, catching and releasing several reds and snook on CAL jigs with shad tails, DOA Shrimp and the soon to be released DOA swim bait, a larger version of the CAL shad tail.

Mark and I fished the tournament with Capt. Andy Cotton on Saturday. We caught and released a 29-inch red, several snook to 22 inches and trout on DOA Shrimp and weedless-rigged CAL shad tails. Although not good enough to win anything, it was a good day and it’s always good to have an opportunity to fish with friends. All fish were immediately photographed and released to fight another day. DOA Fishing Lures has been a long time donor to this event which is a catch, photo, and release fishing tournament that benefits CCA’s conservation efforts.

Tides will be good as we approach a new moon on April 29. Look for reds, snook and big trout on shallow flats or edges of bars in Sarasota Bay.  Fishing deep grass flats for trout, blues, flounder and more should continue to be a good option. In addition to Spanish and king mackerel, false albacore (little tunny) and tripletail, tarpon should start to show any time now in the coastal gulf depending on conditions.

Tight Lines,

Capt. Rick Grassett
