Catch of the Week

Jack McCulloch, from Lakewood Ranch, Fla., caught and released this big Gasparilla Sound flounder out of a pothole on a CAL jig with a shad tail while fishing with Capt. Rick Grassett.

The federal government shutdown may impact people’s outdoor recreation plans in Florida if they are destined for federal parks and wildlife refuges. Authorities are encouraging diving enthusiasts to catch non-native lionfish if they see them roaming around area reefs. Capt. Rick Grasset says anglers should catch and release snook fishing before daylight and then look for reds, trout, blues, Spanish mackerel and more in Sarasota Bay. Action with false albacore (little tunny), Spanish mackerel and more should begin in the coastal gulf any time now.

Fishing Update

Shutdown doesn’t limit all outdoor recreationists’ activities

  • The federal government shutdown may impact people’s outdoor recreation plans in Florida if they are destined for federal parks and wildlife refuges.
  • The shutdown may close hunting, fishing and wildlife viewing on federal refuges, preserves and federal parks. Boat ramps may also be closed, which impacts access to common areas shared between the U.S. government and Florida. Closures may include visitor centers and gates on all access points.
  • To be sure, consult federal park websites.
  • Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC)-managed lands will remain open.

FWC officers will still be on duty throughout the state, and the FWC’s Wildlife Hotline Alert is always available at 888-404-3922 (FWCC).

  • For information on amenities still available at state wildlife management areas – both the ones where the FWC is the lead and for locations where the FWC cooperatively manages land with other government entities – go to MyFWC.com/Viewing and select “Wildlife Management Areas.”

Lionfish derby offers real life experience

  • Before August 2013, I had talked a lot about lionfish, but other than seeing them in tanks, I had never put my hands on one and never had one for dinner.
  • Lionfish is a hot topic right now. The population of this invasive, non-native species has boomed exponentially in the past few years, and recent scientific studies indicate that this species may be negatively impacting our marine resources. Today, we are seeing them in places we’ve never seen them before, and there are no signs of them going away anytime soon.
  • The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has taken notice and is moving forward with actions to help control the population, from changing regulations to hosting a Lionfish Summit later this month (Oct. 22-24) in an effort to identify research and management gaps and brainstorm solutions to the lionfish issue. The summit will be in Cocoa Beach. Visit FWCLionfish.Eventbrite.com to learn more.

Weekly Fishing Report by Capt. Rick Grassett

Capt. Rick DePaiva, from Ft. Myers, FL, battles a tarpon jumped on a fly while fishing the coastal gulf with Capt. Rick Grassett.

Anglers fishing with me on my Action Craft flats skiff the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, had good action catching and releasing trout, bluefish and jacks on DOA Deadly Combos, CAL jigs with shad tails and top water plugs in Sarasota Bay and reds, snook, trout, bluefish and flounder in Gasparilla Sound on CAL jigs with shad tails and DOA Deadly Combos during the past week.

Jerry Roth, from Orlando, FL, fished Sarasota Bay with me last Sunday. He cast top water plugs on deep grass flats along the west side of the bay and caught and released blues, jacks and trout. John Stenger and his son, Jeff, from KY, fished the same areas with me on Monday. They caught and released trout, blues and jacks on DOA Deadly Combos.

With an upcoming trip in the Boca Grande area and since I hadn’t fished there lately, I needed to do some scouting. Capt. Andy Cotton, also out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters, joined me to fish Gasparilla Sound on Thursday where we caught and released several reds, snook, trout and a nice flounder on CAL jigs with shad tails. I hooked a fish that took off on a screaming run and was surprised when it jumped that it was decent sized barracuda! Despite 8 inches of rain earlier in the week, fishing was good. A positive effect of all the rain is that it dropped water temperature on shallow flats into the high 70’s.

Keith McClintock, from Lake Forest, IL, Jack McCulloch, from Lakewood Ranch, FL and Dennis Stroer, from Venice, FL, fished the same area with me on Friday. They had good action catching and releasing several snook, reds, and flounder in skinny water and with trout and a nice blue on DOA Deadly Combos and CAL jigs with shad tails on deep grass flats.

Beat the heat by catch and release snook fishing before daylight and then look for reds, trout, blues, Spanish mackerel and more in Sarasota Bay. Action with false albacore (little tunny), Spanish mackerel and more should begin in the coastal gulf any time now.
