CORTEZ — The Manatee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that took place at a residence in the 3900 block of 116th St W in Cortez on Thursday evening.

A 911 call was placed from the Sunny Shores Mobile Home Park around 8:00 pm. According to MCSO, an argument escalated to violence when Kevin R. Armstrong confronted a 33-year-old woman he had been dating.

Two men had accompanied the woman to the residence on a golf cart so that she could retrieve her personal items. According to the arrest report, Armstrong grabbed a shotgun and started shooting at the woman as she tried to flee.

Deputies say Armstrong continued to shoot as one of the other men grabbed a handgun from the golf cart and returned multiple shots. During the shooting, the woman was hit in the chest.

Armstrong was hiding inside the residence when deputies arrived. He surrendered and was taken into custody, while the woman was taken to Blake Hospital. She is reported to be in stable condition.

Armstrong is in the Manatee County Jail and was charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm and battery. MCSO says the investigation is still underway.
