Dorothy Johnson Green

Dorothy Johnson Green, age 89, of Palmetto, Florida, was called to eternal rest on August 8, 2022.

Dorothy was born on October 15, 1932, in Ellenton, Florida. She was the youngest of twelve and the last remaining child of the late David and Winnie Johnson.

Dorothy was educated in Manatee County Schools, graduating from Lincoln Memorial High School in 1952. She attended Gibbs Junior College, St. Petersburg, before receiving her Bachelors of Science from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Tallahassee Florida

Dorothy began her career in Social Work in West Palm Beach, Florida with the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services (HRS), which was the predecessor to the modern-day DCF– Department of Children and Families and DJJ– Department of Juvenile Justice. She returned to the west coast and worked in Pinellas County before becoming Manatee County’s first black Social Worker. Mrs. Green would serve in many capacities in her 30+ years with the State of Florida before retiring in July 1995 as the Supervisor of Child Abuse and Protective Services.

Her faith was foundational to all that she aspired to and was able to achieve. She accepted Christ at an early age at St. Andrews AME Church and later united with Greater Saint Luke PB Church where she served faithfully in several capacities for more than 50 years including, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Director, and Chairman of the Mother’s Board. In 2015, she united with the Bible Baptist Church of Palmetto where she continued to serve faithfully until her health began to fail.

Past District Deputy Grand Worthy Matron Green embraced the principles of the Most Worshipful Union Grand Lodge Order of the Eastern Star, PHA and lived them out with passion and purpose. She was instrumental in maintaining the legacy of Roseleaf Chapter #139 and served as the Chapter’s Worthy Matron for many years Sister Green’s desire to help others allowed her to take an interest in joining Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Gamma Rho Zeta Chapter in 1981. As a member, her zeal for the betterment of the community and those around her, she served as an Archonette Youth Director and on various committees and projects to that end.

Family love is the cornerstone and remains essential to this day. Dorothy united in holy matrimony with Kary Green 55 years ago and to that union, three children were born.

She was predeceased by her husband, Deacon Kary Green, son, Danny Alexander Green and grandson Corey Alexander Leaner.

She leaves to cherish her memories:

Special Friends: Doris Mays, Nancy Bragg, Mildred Brydson, Francene Richardson, Ruth Jenkins, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Wake will be held on Friday, August 19, 2022, at 5:00 PM at the Bible Baptist Church, 1720 6th Ave W., Palmetto, FL 34221. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 11:00 AM, Bible Baptist Church, 1720 6th Ave W., Palmetto, FL 34221.
