Ila J. Greene, age 80, "Jan" by many, passed away July 2, 2022.
Jan was born in Miami, FL on Feb. 14, 1942. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Ruth Fichter; her husbands, Donald Olmsted and John H. Greene; her daughter, Ruth Ann Olmsted; her son, Daniel Greene and brother, Henry "Hank" Fichter. She is survived by her long-time partner, Mike Herring; her children, Donald F. Olmsted, Jr. "Donnie," Christine Olmsted, Rebecca McGowin (Vernon), Andrew Greene (Kathy), Peter Greene, Victoria Anderson and Cynthia Self; her grandchildren, Ashley Olmsted, Lauren Olmsted, Amanda McGowin Sanchez, Brian McGowin, Abigail McGowin, Matthew Greene, Arikka Greene, Michael Greene, Cody Greene, Sierra, Jasmine, Marie and Ty and 9 great-grandchildren.
Ila moved from Miami to Bradenton in the early 1970s with her husband, Don and young children. She studied at Florida State University and Barry College in Miami Shores and Manatee Junior College. She began working at Manatee Memorial Hospital as a Registered Nurse after being widowed. She worked there for 25 years. During that time, she met and married John Greene who passed away after 16 years. After retiring she met her current partner, Mike Herring. Her fondest joy was spending time with her family. She also spent years volunteering with various community service groups such as the Manatee Historical Society, First United Methodist Church of Bradenton, Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Southern Dames, Junior Women’s Club and a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International.
Visitation was held on Friday, July 8, 2022, at Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 43rd Street Chapel, 604 43rd St W, Bradenton, FL. Services followed Saturday, July 9, 2022, at First United Methodist Church of Bradenton.
