SARASOTA — The League of Women Voters of Sarasota County will host two rallies as part of its Defend Democracy Rally Series, non-partisan events designed to bring citizens together to protect the Constitution, safeguard voting rights, and demand accountability from their leaders. The first will be held from 10:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 4, at South Bayfront Drive, near Ringling Boulevard, in Sarasota.
The theme of the rally is: YES to Fair Districts! NO to Mid-Cycle Redistricting!
In 2010, Florida voters overwhelmingly passed Amendments 5 and 6—known as the Fair Districts Amendments—to prevent partisan gerrymandering. These constitutional protections clearly state: “Congressional districts or districting plans may not be drawn to favor or disfavor an incumbent or political party.” Redistricting in the middle of the decade—without new Census data—ignores the will of the voters and undermines Florida’s Constitution. It threatens the fairness, stability, and integrity of our elections.
“If legislators move forward with mid-cycle redistricting, it sets a dangerous precedent of endless map-drawing for political gain,” said Vilia Johnson, Co-President of LWV Sarasota. “This process erodes voter confidence, undermines representation, and puts partisan interests ahead of the people of Florida.”
The second rally will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 11, at Michael Biehl Park in Venice. This rally is part of Unite and Rise to Defend Democracy, the League’s nationwide campaign in support of the Constitution and in defense of the freedoms and rights it provides.
The Defend Democracy Rally Series is a call for unity, action, and courage. Community members, advocates, and supporters of fair elections are encouraged to attend both rallies, raise their voices, and stand united in defending the rights of voters. Learn more at www.LWVSRQ.org.
