BRADENTON -- At Thursday's Land Use Meeting, the Port Manatee Encouragement Zone/ North County Gateway got a new handle. It will now be known as the "Florida International Gateway." After more than two years of adding a new berth, crane, warehouses, container lot and modernized facilities, the new Florida International Gateway is ready for whatever the all-new Panama Canal, and the rest of the world for that matter, can throw its way.

Commissioner Comments:
DiSabatino -- In real estate, sales are up, prices are up, and supply is down - all good news. The average home price has moved up to $178k, from the $158k mark it was at just a year ago. Under tree protection, in ordinance 714.2.2, trees within the right-of-way for purpose of improvement, road widening and sidewalks have a problem. Some trees are pushing up the sidewalk, and cannot be removed without replacing them, which isn't working for some of the residents. 715.3.4 says one canopy tree shall be planted within 25 ft. of right-of-way. It takes two or three palms to substitute for one canopy tree, which can get expensive. It costs $220 to remove one, then $300 for replacements. In a sense, that mandates too much. We need to get with staff and work on this.
Commissioner McClash said, "Just for those listening, it is not a mandate." Whitmore said, "We all have to trim our trees. I think we are getting ahead of the horse here."
DiSabatino responded, "I'm just saying, we need to look at this. In the Cascades, where I am getting the complaints, is not the only place this is happening.
Hayes -- none
Gallen -- none
Whitmore -- Thank staff for the setback of the signs on University. I hear requests for a hotel or RV park by the Ellenton rink. They have motor-cross and skating events and are in need of a hotel. Hayes added, "we have hotels in Lakewood Ranch. Send them to us."
McClash -- none
Bustle -- none
Chappie -- There is new revitalization on the west side. There's a Fresh Market on Manatee Ave. and the south side of 67th . FDOT is having a open house for the 47th St. pipe replacement project. August 9, 5p.m. to 7p.m.
