BRADENTON – Deputy Superintendent Cynthia Saunders will serve as interim superintendent when Dr. Diana Greene departs for Duval County at the end of the month. The board voted 4-1 to enter into negotiations with Saunders during a meeting Tuesday.
Saunders followed Greene from Marion County when she was hired as deputy superintendent herself by the district in 2013, and was later promoted to deputy superintendent of instructional services following Greene's ascent to superintendent following Rick Mills' retirement. She is also thought to be a candidate for following Greene to Duval.
Board member Dave Miner cast the lone dissenting vote, saying he felt the position should have been advertised and interviews been conducted, but other board members said the haste was owed to the tight timeline, while adding that they had full faith in Saunders' ability to keep the district on its current path.
Greene surprised many when it was reported in April that she had applied for the Duval position just after the district secured an additional 1 mil in school property taxes, following a referendum that passed 51-49 in March.
The board is now faced with finding a permanent superintendent. That decision, however, will be made after the August elections and November runoffs, during which three school board seats will be up for grabs, offering the potential to radically alter the five member board.
