Posted

BRADENTON — Six potential state constitutional amendments will be decided on November's ballot. Two were proposed by citizen initiatives, while four are being brought forward by the state legislature.

Amendment 1, which was proposed by the Florida Legislature, is entitled: Partisan Election of Members of District School Boards. It would require members of school boards in Florida to be elected in a partisan election rather than nonpartisan. It would begin with the 2026 elections.

Amendment 2, which was proposed by the Florida Legislature, is entitled: Right to Fish and Hunt. It would provide a constitutional right to fish and hunt, including traditional methods.

Amendment 3, which was proposed by citizen initiative, is entitled: Adult Personal Use of Marijuana. It would legalize recreational marijuana throughout Florida for adults.

Amendment 4, which was proposed by citizen initiative, is entitled: Amendment to Limit Government Interference with Abortion. It would provide a constitutional right to abortion before fetal viability (estimated to be around 24 weeks) or when necessary to protect the patient's health, as determined by the patient's healthcare provider.

Amendment 5, which was proposed by the Florida Legislature, is entitled: Annual Adjustments to the Value of Certain Homestead Exemptions. It would require an annual inflation adjustment to the value of current or future homestead exemptions that apply solely to levies other than school district levies and for which every person who has legal or equitable title to real estate and maintains thereon the permanent residence of the owner, or another person legally or naturally dependent upon the owner is eligible. It would take effect on January 1, 2025.

Amendment 6, which was proposed by the Florida Legislature, is entitled: People of Public Campaign Financing Requirement. It would repeal the requirement for public financing for campaigns of candidates for elective statewide office who agree to campaign spending limits.

The citizen initiatives reflect the will of the people and will benefit them. With perhps one exception regarding homestead exemptions, the amendments proposed by the legislature reflect the will of the fianciers of the legislators who have been unwilling to protect the clearly expressed will of the people in order to benefit their financial "investors" significantly.

Here's hoping TBT tackles each of the amendments proposed by the state legislature and informs the voters about the ramifications of each (no matter how benign the titles appear). Let's encourage snook without being snookered. Pay attention and pass it on... November will be here quickly.
