BRADENTON – The Manatee Technical Institute is continuing to unfold as one of the great success stories in Manatee County public education. Competing at the recent state SkillsUSA championships, MTI students continued their decade of dominance at the event and will now prepare to send dozens of students to the upcoming national championships.
At an awards ceremony last week, MTI officials presented 84 medals to MTI students who won first, second or third at the 2013 Florida SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Conference, which was held in Pensacola April 29 to May 1.
Manatee Tech students won 42 gold medals at the 46th Annual Conference. The gold medalists, as well as other qualifying students from MTI, will now advance to the national championships, scheduled to be held in Kansas City, Missouri, in June. They will represent MTI and the State of Florida, while competing for the national title in their skill or leadership area.
This was the first year MTI Digital Video Production students competed in the Television (Video) Production contest. The two-person MTI team came in second in the state in the college division.
SkillsUSA is an international organization that promotes excellence, employability skills, and ethics to students in career and technical education to better prepare them for successful careers. The SkillsUSA contests are the most important opportunity students have to compete against their peers and demonstrate their skills. For the past nine years, MTI has won the most medals in the nation.
