There are few things Moms like more than gardens. Manatee River Garden Club is offering self-guided tours of five beautiful and unique gardens on the west side of Bradenton for Mother's Day. Learn about garden design and individual plantings while taking a self-guided stroll through these gardens.

An elegantly served luncheon is available at the Manatee River Garden Club for only $8, along with exhibits, vendors, boutique and plants. There is no admission fee for activities at the clubhouse, whose address is 3120 First Avenue West in Bradenton. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door of the Clubhouse, and are available at any Crowder Brothers Hardware store or from any Garden Club member.

The tour was initiated to fulfill the purpose of the MRGC: “To promote and encourage a community of nature enthusiasts who share the love of gardening, horticulture, floral design, environmental concerns and other related endeavors.” The MRGC was established in 1929. It is a non-profit organization, and member of Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. and National Garden Clubs, Inc. Local restauranteur Sean Murphy says Moms should “Eat Here” On Mother's Day. In a tribute to Murphy’s grandmother, “Nana” Martin, Mom drinks for free at all “Eat Here” locations on Mother's Day and any gift certificates purchased for moms get 25% off.

In the Nova Scotia vernacular “Nana” is an endearment for "grandmother." A “sip" with dinner was part of Nana's daily ritual. Murphy says her doctor had told her to have a "wee sip of port" before every meal. It would calm her nerves and improve her appetite.

For non-sipping moms, Murphy will be offering a complimentary chocolate budino dessert because - as Kate Hepburn said - “every woman should have chocolate every day”. All restaurants will also be offering gift certificates for Mom at a 25% reduction. Eat Here restaurants and Beach Bistro are currently accepting reservations for Mother’s Day.

The Bradenton Marauders kick off a three-game series with the Charlotte Stone Crabs tonight at McKechnie, where it's Thirsty Thursday and soda and Budweiser draft beer products are only $1. After getting off to a dreadful start, the club has begun to gel, climbing out of the FSL's South Division, as they try to reach the .500 mark.

The Marauders, a high-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, will wrap up the series Saturday night and then enjoy a rare Sunday off before hitting the road on Monday to play four at Clearwater. Tickets at the newly-renovated stadium start at just $6.
