Weekend Sounds: Sept. 27-29

Posted

BRADENTON — Hope you're safe from the storm and that you're ready to shake it off this weekend by going out and supporting live entertainment in the Manatee, Sarasota and surrounding areas. Check out The Bradenton Times Weekend Sounds to see what bands you can catch at your favorite venues.

The Garbage-Men
Birdrock Taco Shack
Friday - 6:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

We are a band of five guys from Sarasota, FL who encourage recycling and giving back by playing music on instruments that we make ourselves from garbage and recycled materials.

The band started in March of 2010. After seeing Jack build his first guitar from a recycled cereal box and an old yardstick, Ollie had the idea to make a band that played music exclusively on instruments made from trash.

We now have five members and have made more than fifteen instruments that we play at our shows. We perform regularly across the country, on the streets, and at festivals and charity events. In addition to many Florida venues, the band has played at CNN, NYC Hall of Science, Times Square, Atlanta's Fox Theater for America's Got Talent, St. Petersburg's State Theatre, Tampa's MOSI, The National Guitar Museum Exhibit, and many others. We have been featured in The Blue Man Group Invent an Instrument, NPR's Science Friday, Time Magazine, Wired, and our PBS Gulf Coast Journal segment won an Emmy. We've been featured in a book called Garbology, written by Edward Humes, and even appear in a Chinese middle school English textbook!

The band recently recorded a CD of some of our originals and unique renditions of hit tunes. We donate proceeds from this CD and our other merchandise to both local and national charities. So far, we have raised over $6000. No cover.

The musicians are:

Ollie Gray: Drums
Jack Berry: Guitar
Harrison Paparatto: Sax, Trombone, and Violin
Evan Tucker: Bass
Austin Siegel: Chromatic Percussion

About the venue:

Located in Bradenton Florida's Village of the Arts,  Birdrock Taco Shack is not your average taco joint, but a unique funky-fun taco spot and live music venue. Owner and chef David Shiplett (who also owns the popular Cottonmouth South Soul Kitchen) doesn't serve up just any tacos. Dave has worked as a Chef in San Francisco, San Diego, Sarasota, and now Bradenton. Dine inside the eclectic artsy shack or outdoors on the porch and back patio. Great food, cool people... and TACOS! 1213 13th Avenue West, Bradenton.

André Roy
Bahi Hut & GH Resort
Friday - 7:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.

Originally from Montreal, André moved to Tampa Bay in 2012 and has been playing to rave reviews at every type of venue between St Petersburg and Naples for the last 10 years.

Along with playing his rare and unique '68 Gretsch 7-string guitar, André is also a soulful, rocking versatile vocalist who can perform every style with authenticity and artistry. His vocal style ranges from grooving R&B, to country to full out rock and blues.

André has been a full time performing musician since he turned pro in his early teens when he began performing and touring with recording artists. He majored in music at McGill University in Montreal and was awarded a prestigious Canada Council For The Arts grant to further his music studies at the world-renowned Berklee College Of Music in Boston.

André’s commitment and dedication to every form of music creates the perfect ambiance for any venue. No cover.

About the venue:

The Bahi Hut. Since 1954 it has been Sarasota's authentic spot to meet for good conversation and potent beverages. One of the few Old Florida places left in Sarasota. It is a local legend and a time capsule, unchanged since when it was built.

John Nemeth
Cottonmouth
Friday - 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Boise, Idaho is hardly the place anyone would conjure up as a hotbed of soul music.

But for John Németh, it’s where his love for the genre began—and the starting point for a journey that’s taken him from his first gigs fronting a teenaged band to five Blues Music Award nominations in 2013 alone.

It’s where this preternaturally talented son of a Hungarian immigrant gained his early chops on the harmonica, building on the style of rootsy heroes like Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson. Németh’s first paid performance came in 1991, when he was hired to perform drinking songs for a pinochle luncheon held by the Catholic Daughters of America before setting his sights on the Boise club scene, where, for nearly a decade, he played seven nights a week at local pubs, taverns, joints, and parties.

After opening a show for Junior Watson, Németh was tapped as tour opener for the guitar great, a gig that took him across the United States, to Scandinavia, and into the recording studio for his 2004 solo debut, Come And Get It, featuring Watson.

About the venue:

Cottonmouth - Bradenton Florida’s music venue serving southern soul cuisine and live music on our beautiful patio in the Village of the Arts. Cottonmouth is the place to hang and feed your soul.

Rockin' Jake
Floridays Woodfire Grill & Bar
Friday - 8:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.

Rockin’ Jake has been hailed by many as one of the premier harmonica players in the country. His original sound is a hybrid of second line, swamp funk, blues and zydeco with influences from Paul Butterfield, Big Walter Horton, James Cotton, The Meters, WAR, J. Geils Band, Clifton Chenier, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Jake has conjured up this formula that is blowing crowds away from coast to coast. Widely known as a touring juggernaut among his peers, his schedule of over 200 performances per year include clubs, concert venues, and festivals.

Based out of New Orleans since 1990, Rockin’ Jake relocated since being flooded out by Hurricane Katrina, then settled in St. Louis and now lives in Southern Florida. He is a five-time winner of Off Beat Magazine’s coveted Best of the Beat award for best harmonica player.

About the venue:

Floridays - We’re not just seafood and orange groves - we’ve got acres of farmland producing strawberries, tomatoes, okra, green beans and a variety of greens. We have a rich heritage of southern cooking and family gatherings.
