Dark Money in Local Elections: What Every Voter Should Know

Posted

Who is paying for the political mailers showing up in your mailbox? Who funds political committees? And how can voters separate campaign messaging from campaign financing?

In this episode of The Big Picture Manatee, the team welcomes Cathy Antunes, author of Local Dark Money: Citizens United Meets Main Street in Sarasota and Manatee, to explain how political action committees (PACs), campaign finance laws, and so-called "dark money" operate in local elections.

OMG, so much DARK money, and much is hidden under names not associated with the actual donors. Guess who is behind and funding big money in many local pacts: Pat Neal, Carlos Beruff, Benderson, Schroeder-Manatee, John Cannon and others. Now many pacts are hiding their identities with fictitious names. The bottom line is, those glossy mailers cost tens of thousands of dollars to mail out. The more you get in your mailbox is an indication of who is benefiting from trying to sway your vote for their return on investment. Ruth Lawler

The analysis and research by Cathy Antunes exposes the greed and unethical behavior of the big developers. They use dark money to get their candidates elected. Then they overbuild and destroy our quality of life. They make huge fortunes while we pick up the tab. They are overbuilding in east Manatee County and we pay for it with increased traffic and destruction of green space.
