Four Property Tax Related Amendments Pass Key Committee Votes

Posted

TALLAHASSEE — Four proposed constitutional amendments aimed at property tax reform in Florida moved forward this week after winning approval from the Florida House's State Affairs Committee on Tuesday. The committee has a Republican majority, and the issue has been a major 2026 priority of Governor Ron DeSantis.

All of the proposals would prohibit local governments from cutting law enforcement budgets due to lower property tax revenue. They also do not apply to school property taxes.

House Joint Resolution 201 would establish a homestead exemption for all non-school property taxes. House Joint Resolution 205 would exempt residents ages 65 and over from paying non-school taxes on their homes.

House Joint Resolution 209 increases homestead exemptions by $100,000 for non-school property taxes, but only applies if the property is subject to a comprehensive multiperil insurance policy.

House Joint Resolution 211 would allow the full value of the accrued benefit from special limitations on homestead property tax assessments to be portable, meaning it could be applied to a new homestead for non-school levies.

And just how is the state going to raise money for the common good? I am open to understanding.

Florida favors the most regressive form of taxes... the sales tax! An extra fee for every shirt on your back or shoe on your foot... any any food not cooked over your home fires! That's because workers aren't paid enough to buy or own homes in this state!

I know the above proposals do not eliminate property taxes all together like the governor wants. However, if you reduce or eliminate property taxes the lost revenue needs to be replaced. The Governor wants to increase the sales tax so you will still pay out of pocket and the funds will go the State coffers instead of the County. Two negative things happen with this plan now Tallahassee controls the purse and decides what we need or what they want to give us, and you know longer have the federal tax deduction for property tax ( you can't deduct sales tax).
