Indivisible Manatee, in partnership with local chapters of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), will celebrate Labor Day with rallies to highlight the importance of America’s workforce. Along with hundreds of other cities across the country, “Workers Over Billionaires” events will recognize the contributions of the working class and highlight the dangers of the current administration’s favoritism toward the wealthy.
From 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Labor Day (Monday, September 1), hundreds of protesters will be waving signs in the Sarasota/Bradenton area (along the south side of University Parkway between Cattleman and Honore), and another one on Cortez Road (along the north side of the 5000 block in front of the Big Lots parking lot). Organizers say the timing for this event is intentional, putting a spotlight on the millions of people who work hard every day to put food on their tables and keep a roof over their heads.
“Labor Day was established to recognize hard-working Americans and their contributions to this country,” said Liv Coleman of the Indivisible Manatee leadership team. “What is happening now is stripping away the rights of the working class, who are the backbone of America.”
Indivisible Manatee has been hosting protests for the past several months and plans to continue doing so.
“It’s important that working people stand up together and make our voices heard this Labor Day and every day,” said Amy Runkle, longtime Southwest Florida nursing home caregiver and member leader of 1199SEIU, the largest union of healthcare workers in Florida. “It’s a shame so many politicians in Tallahassee and Washington work only to benefit their billionaire friends, but we can put our communities and families first if we speak up, stay united, and fight.”
