Posted

Our beloved James Maxie "Max" Smith, Jr., 81, of Bradenton, Florida, passed away at his home on May 27, 2024. He was born in West Point, Mississippi on July 26, 1942. The son of James "Jim" Maxie Smith, Sr. and Lucille (Persons) Smith.

Max, a graduate of Corinth High School in Corinth, MS in 1960, and a recipient of his bachelor's degree from Mississippi State University in 1964, dedicated his life to a successful career in finance and banking. His contributions in this field left an indelible mark on his colleagues, the institutions, and communities in Mississippi, Tennessee, and Kentucky where he worked. Max's commitment extended beyond his professional life, as he actively participated in advisory boards, rotary clubs, leadership organizations, and community theater in the areas where he lived. During his time in Kentucky, he was a valued member of the Kentucky Bankers Association and served as chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Kentucky Schools of Banking.

Max was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Lucille Smith. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and his daughters Courtney Carol Simmons, Daphne Kay Secrest, Erin Lea Smith, Cori Smith Kramer (Ted), and Jean Ogle (Tyler). He was immensely proud of his grandchildren, Bryan Simmons, Brady Simmons, Brandon Simmons, Bennett Ogle, Emily Ogle, James "Jack" Kramer, and Benjamin Kramer. His brothers, Paul Smith and Steve Smith (Diane), and beloved cousins, nephews, and nieces also survived him.

Max's heart swelled with joy and pride as he watched his daughters grow and thrive over the years. While he was a man of few words, he was full of great love and admiration for his family.

As a lifelong fan of all things Mississippi State University and a dedicated supporter of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, his passions extended beyond his family and professional life. In retirement, Max and Barb pursued their shared love for travel, visiting friends and family, and eventually settling in Key West, FL. There, they discovered a new passion for boating, which brought them immense joy. Departing from Key West, they embarked on the 6,500-mile-long Great Loop, a journey that took them along the east coast, into Canada, through the Great Lakes, down the Mississippi River, and along the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. This adventure held special significance for Max, as his father, Jim, played a pivotal role in the construction of the waterway.

At his request, a celebration of life will be held in July on the water near the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, where the Smith family often spent time together. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Jude Hospital.
