Manatee County Urges Caution Around Downed Power Lines Following Milton

MANATEE COUNTY — In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, is issuing a crucial safety reminder to all residents: Stay clear of downed power lines and always treat them as if they are energized. Power lines that have fallen or are in contact with debris, trees, or water can pose life-threatening dangers.

Power Line Safety Tips:

• Assume All Power Lines Are Live: Never assume a power line is de-energized, even if it appears damaged or inactive. Always treat power lines as if they are energized and dangerous.
• Don’t Touch Trees or Limbs Near Power Lines: If trees or limbs have fallen and are touching power lines, do not attempt to remove or go near them. The trees or limbs may be electrified.
• Avoid Debris and Water: Stay clear of debris piles and puddled water near downed power lines. Water can conduct electricity, increasing the risk of electrocution.

• Leave the Area Immediately: If you come across a downed power line, do not approach it. Leave the area and keep a safe distance (at least 30 feet).
• Call the Power Company: Report the downed line immediately to Florida Power and Light or Peace River Electric Cooperative.

• Generators should only be used outdoors, far from windows and doors, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
• Never connect generators directly to household wiring unless a proper transfer switch is installed by a licensed electrician.
