Owen Gifford Clinton departed this life peacefully and on his own terms on September 29, 2025. He was 92.
Born on November 5, 1932, Owen faced hardships early in his life when his mother died unexpectedly. He persevered through many challenges as a young person, but winning a track scholarship to Wayne State University in Detroit, MI changed his life. He discovered a love for writing, reading and education that eventually resulted in two masters' degrees. His life was a testament to the transformative power of education.
Owen dedicated his professional life to service as a public-school teacher and guidance counselor in the Detroit area. His thoughtfulness, gentle spirit, and unwavering belief in the potential of every student left a lasting impact on generations.
Beyond the classroom, Owen lived a life rich in adventure and exploration. A lover of the outdoors, he was an avid tennis player and cyclist well into his later years. He was fluent in French. His happy place was on a bike, exploring the Pyrenees, alongside his wife Patti, the love of his life. Their adventurous spirit took them to live in beautiful places, including Fripp Island, SC; Nantucket, MA (where they ran a bed & breakfast and Patti hand wove award-winning baskets); the village of Chalabre in southern France; and Anna Maria Island, FL.
Owen is predeceased by his wife, Patrica Ann Dunn Clinton, father Walter, sister Joyce and brother Walter Jr. He is survived by his niece Anne, nephew Walter III, and sister-in-law Gerri. He also leaves behind dear friends including Terry, Marilyn and Gunilla, who will carry his memory forward with love and gratitude.
A private memorial will be held in accordance with his wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Smile Train in his honor.
