The Florida Man in Lincoln’s Assassination Plot

Long before “Florida Man” became shorthand for the bizarre, one of our own was tied to one of the darkest nights in American history.

Lewis Thornton Powell, often known by the alias “Payne,” spent part of his youth in Live Oak, where his father served as a minister. By all accounts, he was quiet, striking, and unremarkable. But the Civil War would alter his course. He served as a Confederate soldier, was captured, and later took an oath of allegiance to the Union. Somewhere in that shifting ground, he crossed paths with John Wilkes Booth.

According to testimony from the 1865 military tribunal, Powell appeared in Booth’s circle in the final months of the war, likely drawn in through Confederate sympathizer networks operating in Washington.

According to records held by the Library of Congress, Booth’s original plan was not assassination, but kidnapping. The idea was to seize Abraham Lincoln and use him as leverage to free Confederate prisoners. Meetings took place quietly in Washington and nearby Maryland, often at a boarding house run by Mary Surratt.

But as the Confederacy collapsed in the spring of 1865, the plan darkened. Kidnapping gave way to something far more desperate.

Booth didn’t need another planner, he needed someone who could carry out the unthinkable. Powell, a battle-tested soldier with a reputation for strength and obedience, fit the role. He was assigned a specific task, kill William H. Seward, Lincoln’s Secretary of State and one of the most powerful men in the country.

On April 14, 1865, the same night Lincoln was shot at Ford’s Theatre, Powell went to Seward’s home under the pretense of delivering medicine. Seward, recovering from a carriage accident, was bedridden and wearing a rigid metal brace to stabilize a fractured jaw.

What followed was swift and violent. According to testimony presented before the military commission in 1865, Powell attacked Seward in his bed, stabbing him repeatedly and injuring others who rushed to intervene. One of Powell’s blows struck the metal brace, deflecting what might have been a fatal cut to Seward’s throat. Seward survived, though badly wounded.

Outside that home, the larger plot was already unraveling.

Booth had succeeded. Others had failed. And within days, the search for those involved led authorities back to Surratt’s boarding house.

That’s when Powell reappeared.

According to the official trial transcript, he arrived muddy, disheveled, and carrying a pickaxe. He claimed he had been hired to dig a drain. Standing nearby, Mary Surratt raised her hand and swore she had never seen him before.

It was a moment that would echo through the investigation.

Powell was arrested on the spot. The connection between him and Surratt helped confirm what authorities had begun to suspect, that this was not the act of one man, but a coordinated conspiracy.

On July 7, 1865, Powell, Surratt, and two others were executed by hanging at the Washington Arsenal. Surratt became the first woman executed by the U.S. government. Powell, the young man who once lived among the pinewoods of North Florida, died as one of the central figures in the plot that followed Lincoln’s assassination.
